The Mud Pendant is a singular piece in our lighting collection. Where our other pendants are woven, the Mud Pendant is formed from clay gathered from a local riverbed in northern Ghana by members of SWOPA, the Sirigu Women’s Organization for Pottery and Art. Each piece is built using the ancient coil technique, a pottery tradition passed down through generations of women in the community, then fired in a pit kiln.

The pit firing process is what makes each Mud Pendant genuinely one of a kind. As each piece bakes in the fire, its finish is determined entirely by its position in the kiln and the heat that reaches it, ranging from warm chocolate brown to deep charcoal black to a combination of the two. No two pieces will ever look the same.

Small and sculptural, the Mud Pendant works well in a cluster above a dining table or kitchen island, as a bedside pendant, or anywhere a considered ceramic object with a genuine material story earns its place.
