The perfectly simple floor lamp we wanted for our own homes, the Oak Lamp was inspired by a favorite vintage find.
The base is hand turned from white oak sourced from a century-old Los Angeles lumber company, finished with an environmentally friendly hardwax oil by Julie Jackson and Jonathan Meador of Surcle Wood in Los Angeles. Surcle works exclusively with local specialty lumber and reclaimed urban wood, producing pieces with grain patterns unavailable in conventional timber. The Oak Lamp base is turned on a mega-lathe, a process that gives it the clean proportions of a piece you can keep for a lifetime.
The shade is handwoven from elephant grass by members of SWOPA, the Sirigu Women’s Organization for Pottery and Art in northern Ghana. The grass is harvested from West African riverbanks using traditional methods and sun-dried before weaving. Each shade diffuses light warmly through its natural weave.
The result is a floor lamp made in collaboration with makers in Los Angeles and northern Ghana, from materials sourced within their own regions. It works well in a living room, bedroom, or reading corner, anywhere a considered floor lamp earns its place.
Wired in Los Angeles to US standards. Lead time 6 weeks. Available for pickup at our Lincoln Heights studio or shipped nationwide. Trade pricing available for interior designers and architects.
